Knucklehead Just Doesn't Learn

Yesterday, Der Leader, formally announced his attention to send another 21,000 troops to Iraq in a last ditch attempt to show people around the world that he was right all along; that invading Iraq was a good decision, that it freed the people and gave them freedom and democracy. Bush is so intent on preserving some snippet of legacy that he has deluded himself that sending more troops will hasten the spiral of violence that is Iraq. Unfortunately for him, this troop escalation masquerading as a troop "surge" isn't fooling anyone with half of a brain. We have already had troop build ups in the region on two different occasions since the start of the war, and we have not made any more progress in reining in the spiraling civil war that is consuming our soldiers and the spirit of this country like nothing in recent memory. We are walking in place, desperately trying to figure out how to avoid another Vietnam, when we are actually using that failed war's blue print as How To Win A War Guide.

Twenty one thousand troops are not going to change the course of events in a country that is run by such a consortium of different groups; Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, sheiks, warlords, tribal leaders, clerics, para-military death squads, common thugs, everyone wants to be number one. How anybody thought we could plant the seeds of democracy in a country with the history of extremism, instability and infighting that categorizes Iraq is beyond comprehension. At this point half a million troops wouldn't make a difference. This latest Bush Bumble is a last gasp at trying to resolve a problem that is unsolvable. The only thing that will result is more death, more hate, more violence.

The thrust of this plan hinges on Iraq's Maliki led government, who have been nearly useless in defending their own sovereignty. Since the government was elected it has been perceived as weak and ineffectual and the continued chaos in Iraq is testament to its inability to regain control of the country. The U.S. is counting on Iraq to take a more offense strategy against the insurgency, but it's past failings in everything, from stemming the sectarian violence which has crippled the country to it's own lack of cohesiveness, underlines the immensity of this proposition. The Iraq government is not capable of leading Iraq on it's own. If the U.S. was not there to hold their hand every second of every day, the country would implode and explode simultaneously. We cannot expect the government of Iraq to take care of its internal divisions and lead the country at the same time. It is not going to happen. All we are doing is postponing the inevitable. We lost the war the minute we invaded Iraq under false pretenses, but Bush can't let go. He can't see the disaster he created and where this newest lapse of judgement is going to lead. After this latest debacle we are going to see Iran and Syria tightening their hold on the Middle East and we are going to see an ever burgeoning radical Islamic fervor throughout the region. The radical shift will fuel terrorism world wide will continue to increase, not abate. We will be less secure, not more secure.

Three thousand U.S. soldiers dead. Seventeen thousand wounded, more than 100,000 Iraq's killed, the vast majority "collateral damage." What do we have to show for it?
