Derek Brottlund Ebay Crook
On December 21, 2008 I purchased a D70 digital camera from a guy, named Derek Brottlund who has an Ebay store called freedom_real_money_store. My plan after getting it on the 21st was to send it out to get tuned up, which is what I always do with my camera equipment before. However, since I was going out of the country a few weeks on vacation and wouldn't be back until the end of January, 2009 I figured I would send it in when I got back.
I got back from vacation and sent in the camera I bought on Ebay on the 26 or 27th of January. I always send my equipment to the same company and they have always done an outstanding job. I trust them explicitly.
I received a phone call from them about a week later and they told me that the camera I had bought from Derek Brottlund had water damage. As a result of this I had to do the following things:
Replace the main FPC (main circuit board)
Repair memory compression (CHA error)
Adjust lens bayonet mount alignment (this was another issue apart from the water damage)
Generally clean, lubricate and ajust.
As you can imagine I was furious. I would never sell someone a camera that had that many problems. I paid $485.00 for the camera body and the lens and had to drop another $249.00 for labor and repairs.
I contacted Derek Brottlund as soon as I got word of the problems. I wrote him three times and he never returned my e-mail. I called Ebay and they gave me his contact information. I called him twice and he never returned my phone calls.
At this point I contacted the Resolution Center at Ebay and made a formal complaint. Derek Brottlund finally got around to sending me an e-mail in which he stated, "The camera was fine for my intentions. The water damage probably happened in transit."
I wrote him back and told him that the package arrived in perfect condition and asked him to refund the $249.00 for the cost of the camera repair. He stonewalled and refused to answer any more of my phone calls or e-mails.
Ebay told me that although I was on vacation for most of January and therefore not available to have my money returned by Paypal, the window had passed for refunds and they stated there was nothing they could do to get my money back. Because Derek Brottlund had sent the camera quickly, and he had 100% positive feedback, I left him positive feedback before I left on vacation, never believing I had been sent a camera with water damage.
Because Ebay could not do anything about getting my money back, I had no choice but to close the case. Although I was told by Ebay that they take issues like this seriously, I saw nothing on Derek Brottlunds Ebay page indicating he had in essence ripped me off $249.00.
This blog entry is to warn everyone not to buy anything from this guy. There is nothing worst that a person who knowingly ships out defective merchandise. The whole point of shopping on places like Ebay is to save some money. In essence I paid almost $750.00 for a camera and lens. With that amount of money I would have more than half the money for a Nikon D300.
I'm still waiting for my money punk.
