The Dawn of a New Day

It's taken me a few days to get over my high of Barack Obama being elected our 44th President. I was so excited I almost jumped through the roof of my office. Up until the last minute I thought that something bad was going to happen. Wide spread fraud would strip him of a win, an attempt would be made on his life, or McCain would suddenly fall into a perfect storm of good luck.

At 8:00 p.m. I was home, my eyes glued to the television, when they announced that California had gone under the Democratic column giving Obama the electoral votes he need to win the presidency. I saw there dumbfounded, not able to believe that he actually won, but beyond ecstatic he did.

As fit I think he is to be president, I have lowered my expectations of what he can do. Not because he lacks the will or the ability to make some significant changes to our country, but because he's inherited a gigantic mess of problems: Two wars, a tanking economy, a screwed up health care system, crumbling infrastructure nation wide, a litany of issues and problems. It may be that he only is able to partially address these issues in his entire terms.

The Bush/Cheny administration left a big, gaping hole to fill. A hole that they have been digging with an earth mover for the last eight years. With a lack of funds and a huge deficit, Obama is not going to be able to tackle these problems they way he would like to. He is going to be strapped down by the realities of our economy. Rather than having an earth mover to refill the hole, he is going to to be using various shovels. It won't be done at a fast pace, but with perseverance and everybody doing their part, not only in government, but ourselves as well, the day will come when we will once again have a stable economy. We will also have a strong health care system available to all, money invested in various infrastructure projects nation wide, the focus will be on alternative fuels, retooling our industrial center, particularly the automotive industry, and regaining the respect and admiration of the world. As an American it pains me to see how low we have sunk in world opinion. How we are seen as bullys, occupiers and aggressors.

Yes, there are a lot of things to think about and worry about and be concerned about, but we've taken the first step forward by electing to office a man who can guide our nation through these turbulent times and bring us out intact to the other side of the tunnel. A leader that comes once in a generation.

I've waited almost a decade for this. It's a dawn of a new day.
