Apple Burgers and Organic Eating
I just realized that I don't need to keep putting the date on my entries as the program does it automatically. So, I will title this Apple Burgers and Organic Eating.
After having eaten like a pig for many years and filled my body with a myriad of toxins, I finally decided in December 2005, to go the whole foods route otherwise known as "going organic." I won't get into the details here, I have class in an hour and if I start getting excited about something, I'm liable to get out of control and possibly miss class. I'll post something later on.
There is a misconception that eating organically is some kind of diet, but although weight loss often happens, eating organically is just one part of a much larger life style change. It's changing the way you think, eat and go about your life. Here I'm just going to focus on eating.
Eating salads can get boring, and even thought there are dozens of ways to make a salad, invariably you start to crave something different. After not having had a hamburger for several months I was really craving one. I couldn't stop thinking about driving to In & Out and picking up a Double-Double, yet I knew that doing so would open a Pandora's Box of problems and would cause me to justify falling back into my old culinary habits. Instead, I exercised some self-control and rustled up, with the help of my lovely wife, some apple burgers. What? you might be asking, dessert before dinner? I know it sounds fruity (as an idea and a meal) but, I can assure you that apple burgers are tasty and delectable. To make your own batch, do the following.
1. Get three green apples, one green bell pepper, two cups of brown rice, a table spoon of ginger, 2 teaspoons of olive oil, ten slices of bread and mix everything together after of course, cutting/processing all the ingredients. (Make sure you pit the bell pepper and take out the seeds) Using a wooden spoon and stirring constantly for ten minutes didn't quite do the trick. I washed my hands and then kneaded everything together with hands, kind of like working with dough. My hands started cramping so my wife took over for a while. Twelve to fifteen minutes between the two of us gave us the consistency we needed to make the burgers. After your apple burger paste is ready, get a ball of it and form it into a patty about the size of your palm, or a little smaller if you have ape sized hands. You should be able to squeeze out about ten or so patties.
At this point, heat up some oil in a pan and place as many patties as you can get into it without crowding. Cook about three minutes each side and then take them out. Serve on pita bread. I'm a ketchup freak so I poured some ketchup and mustard on mine. They make a fine meal. It's kind of like eating a hamburger, but with a veggie twist. Try the recipe and let us know how they came out.
